About NZ Fuel Watch

Independent fuel supply monitoring for New Zealand.

What is NZ Fuel Watch?

NZ Fuel Watch is a free, independent public information site that tracks New Zealand's fuel supply in near real-time. We monitor petrol, diesel, and jet fuel stock levels, track fuel tanker movements, aggregate pump prices, and provide AI-written supply summaries to help everyday New Zealanders understand the state of fuel supply at a glance.

The site is designed to make publicly available data easier to read. It is not a news blog, not a trading site, and not a government service. No paywalls, no registration, and only basic site analytics plus advertising-related technologies as described in our terms and privacy page.

Data Sources

All data comes from public sources:

  • Fuel stock levels: MBIE fuel stocks updates and oil statistics, licensed under CC BY 4.0
  • Vessel tracking: AIS (Automatic Identification System) public maritime data
  • Pump prices: Gaspy national average fuel price data
  • Crude oil prices: International benchmark data (Dubai crude)

How It Works

The dashboard refreshes automatically throughout the day. MBIE publishes fuel stocks updates and oil statistics, which we process and display as days of cover for each fuel type. Vessel tracking updates as tankers report their positions via AIS. Dubai crude prices are used for the price outlook. Our AI analysis combines those sources into a plain-language risk assessment.

Independence

NZ Fuel Watch is an independent project. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any government agency, fuel company, or industry body. The site is built and maintained in Auckland, New Zealand.
